Spring 2019 Ted Kessler Tour: Long Island City

Sunday May 5, 2019 – 11am to 4pm – 5 LUs

Ted Kessler was a longtime Architects League member who is remembered for his generosity to the profession. He was well known for leading students and others on walking tours throughout Manhattan. The Architects League’s Ted Kessler Walking Tour remains a tribute to his memory and legacy.

The Twelfth Annual Ted Kessler Walking Tour will follow a route circling through Long Island City and Hunters Point, an area that architecture critic James Russell once described as “thrilling and appalling in equal measure.” The tour will go through one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the country, including stops at the Gantry Plaza Park with spectacular views of Manhattan, the impressive Hunters Point Historic District, the sites scheduled for Amazon’s HQ2 development and local landmarks including PS1 and a new library designed by Steven Holl currently under construction. This approximately four mile long route will feature stories about iconic landmarks, hidden gems, historic buildings, recent construction and proposed projects.

The Spring 2019 Ted Kessler Walking Tour is open to both ALNNJ Members and their guests. AIA Members who attend will receive 5 AIA LUs. The tour costs $12 per person. Payment in advance by credit card is required and tickets will go on sale in April. The Ted Kessler Walking Tour is an annual event for members and guests of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey, with new tours researched and led by ALNNJ past president Joe David premiering in the fall and then repeating the following spring. This walking tour follows the same route that premiered in November 2018.
